Where can parents find Driver's education information to help children?

I have a big problem. We have tried and tried to help my daughter learn to drive (she is 22, so I cannot forbid her from driving). I want her safe, not just able to pass the state test (which i am pretty sure she could pass). To me, her driving skills are horrible. Her driver's instructor says she does well.. I don't agree. I have been in the vehicle many hours with her. THe driver's instructor only a few hours. Does anyone know where a relative can find a guide on how to HELP someone learn to drive. Teaching driving is not as easy as it my seem. The last thing I would want to happen is her to get the license and hurt or kill herself or someone else. ANY Help would be appreciated! THANKSPlease; answers from parents who have been through this would be appreciated. I would prefer no defensive answers from children who were trained by their parents. My only concern is for the safety of my daughter. I am not trying to be a difficult individual. THANKS

you know what the problem is? you........ I sat there and made my parents a nervious wreck.......... just cause i got it.. I had an attitude like screw you it is mine.......... what can you say now... then they took it away for 6 months.............. i realized how much control they had.... think about it................Ya never know unless you put your foot down.....i might have had it but they wouldn't let me until they said i could......... i am grearful cause i have never had a accident or anything else.......go figure...thank you mom

well, she might actually be a good driver without you in the car.I know that my mom makes me nervous as heck when I drive. I'm 25 and have never had a ticket or an accident that was my fault. But, somehow when my mother is in the car with me, I do stupid things because I'm scared she's judging me, so I dont concentrate as much as I should. I didn't mean to sound defensive, I was just trying to point out that sometimes parents make children nervouse. Personally, I couldn't learn with my mom. She was the type that would 'press the break' on the passenger side (push her foot to the floorboard like she was stepping on the break) hold on to the door handle until her knuckles turned white, and yell at me everytime i went faster than 5 under the speed limit, as well as constantly think i was going to fall off the road. (because she wasn't used to being on the passenger side, and i wasn't used to be on the driverside so i would drive closer to that outer side of the lane) I had to have someone else teach me how to drive. My boyfriend's older brother actually taught me. He was 23 at the time and was a good driver, no accidents, maybe one ticket. It was so much different learning from him because he didn't make me as tense. Again, I'm not trying to be defensive, I'm just explaining my situation. I doubt, well I hope, you don't act like my mom when your daughter is driving. maybe you can try riding in the back seat while someone else rides in the front seat to see if there's any difference in her driving. that way you could see if this is a factor. Like i said before, practice is key to being a good driver.

Sheriste,As a driving school owner / instructor for over 25 years here in California, I deal with this situation all the time. Your fear about your daughter's safety behind-the-wheel is 100% justified.Approximately 45,000 people in the US are killed each year in a vehicle accident. The level of driver competency required to pass a driver's license test is "insanely low" and most of the people who answered your question fall into this category. Sorry people, you just don't know what you don't know about driving or teaching driving.The problem is most likely her driving instructor. Here in California, the DMV eliminated the requirement for a driving instructor applicant to take a driving exam so the level of competency of many driving instructors is also "insanely low".Most incompetent driving instructors focus on teaching the student "how to pass a driving test" instead of teaching them how to drive......they are two completely different things. Find another driving instructor, preferrably one that has been teaching at least 10 years.Ask the potential instructor what he / she is going to teach your daughter.....if he says that he's going to teach her how to pass the driving test, then look for another one and keep looking until you find one that will teach her 1st how to drive and 2nd how to pass a driving test.There are thousands of mothers out there with the same feelings that you have about their children's driving but are afraid to talk about them because of the negative comments they would receive, just like you did.
