| My boyfriend only made 2600.00 working for a band they want to send him a 1099-misc does he have to file taxes The band never took out taxes they paid him in cash, they emailed him 3/15/08 saying they wanted to send him this form when they have none of his information. If they do send him this form will he have to file taxes seeing he only made 2600.00? Will he have to pay taxes on the money he made? |

| Of course he does! He needs to file this on Schedule C. He can deduct any resonable and necessary business expenses from it though. If the net is over $400 he'll have to pay self-employment taxes on it. If it's his only income then there won't be any income tax due, but filing requirement for self-employment is only $400. |

| Yes, he has to file. If he was paid over $400 for working as an independent contractor (this is the legal term for a person from whose pay taxes do not have to be taken), then he must file, whether or not he receives the form, and must pay both income tax and self-employment tax. |

| Yes, and actually he's required to file whether or not he gets the 1099 form. If that was his only income for the year, he won't owe income tax, but he will owe self-employment tax (for social security and medicare) in any case - that will be around $360. The people above who say that he doesn't have to report it or pay tax are urging him to commit tax fraud.
