I make $57k a year. What's the best way to file my taxes?

I make $57k a year as an engineer for a company
I'm single
I have no kids
I rent an apartment
I live in California
I made about $1500 in interest this year
No other income besides savings interest

What is the most recommended way for me to file my taxes? Should I go to Best Buy and pay $40 for tax software? I would really like to do all of this for free. I'm not sure why I should have to pay to file my taxes. Thanks.
