Is it possible to teach with a criminal record?

My best friend was busted for pot whilst a minor. He's now in grad school with the hopes of becoming a teacher. He swears that it isn't gonna be a problem because his record is sealed. Is that really the case? I'm worried because he's more like a brother than a friend and I'd hate to see him waste all that time and money. Thanks in advance for any input.
