Does PA offer Resident Teaching programs like Baltimore City Public Schools...

...and PG County, MD schools? I've been doing some research and have noticed that Baltimore City Public Schools and PG County schools in MD offer a Resident teaching program for people w/o teaching degrees or certificates. You take a summer course to get a Resident teaching certificate, and you begin teaching in the fall. During the school year, you earn the same salary and benefits as other teachers, and continue to work towards your Teaching Certificate so you are eligible to continue teaching after your resident year. Are there any school districts in Pennsylvania that offer similar programs?

I am a PA certified teacher. I'm not sure what you mean by a Resident teaching certificate.

In PA, if you have a B.A. or B.S., you can go to the area's intermediate unit and apply for an emergency certificate to be a substitute. You can be a long-term subsitute with an emergency certification. A long-term who is placed permanently is paid full rate with benefits. Day -to-day substitues earn less. ($85 in my district, but we are very rural). You can be emergency certified for up to two years. Of coarse, you can only be emergency certified if the district has a shortage of people. In PA, shortages are very field specific and area specific.

People who are just in training to be teachers complete field experience and student teaching. Neither are paid. They are for college credit only.

Hope that helps.

This would work in the Philadelphia School District for specific jobs that are hard to fill (i.e., middle school, special ed).

It's called Philadelphia Teaching Fellows. http://www.philadelphiateachingfellows.org/
