where do you begin when teaching yourself the guitar HELP!!!!!!?

kk so my stepdad bought me a RED FENDER GUITAR!!YAY!!!! i love it soooo much, but there is only 1 problem...i dont know anything about playing a guitar, i hav a book of all the chords but i dont know how i would use the chords after i have learnt them, and what chords do i learn????

What my son did was took 1 day a week classes for 8 weeks. They taught him some major cords and how to generally play. Now he goes online and looks up websites that show tabs and straight music so he can match up what the note is to where your hand should be on tabs. He gets the starter books at the music store and between the computer, books and his 8 leasons, he's learning how to play.

added: oh yeah, if you get the starter books, get the ones that come with the CD for the computer. It's like a teacher on your computer,
