| Well it depends on the age group of your class. First, define Glittering Generality, and how value words can be used to drive an agenda, or as a weapon, or for control. Then I would work on a brainstorming session, to give all your students the chance to define some set value words and compare them. Ask them to write down the first word that comes to their mind when you say, eg. "freedom", "charity" or "democracy". There will be some difference, but there will also be some similarities. Then, you will explain how those in power select the most expected (average response) to identify their motives and ignore the variation. Another exercise, to do with the class, would be ask the ages of everyone present. If you've got a majority of say, 15 year olds, but there are some 14 and some 16, say that the Glittering Generality would be based on their grade containing ONLY 15 year olds, and how would they feel if the minority were not included? |
