Potty training 101: Firstly, never use "wee-wee pads" they teach your dog that it is acceptable to go to the bathroom in the house. If you have any, just trash them now. Take your puppy out roughly every hour or two, after naps, eating, drinking, playing, when you first get up, and before bed. Wonder around outside with him till he uses the bathroom (You can teach him to go on command even if you start saying "go potty," "find your spot," or something to that effect). If he doesn't want to go your just going to have to keep wondering around with him until he does. When he goes outside make a big out of it and praise him. Should he go inside quietly clean it up (under no circumstances should you yell, shove his nose in it, or any such thing). If by chance you catch him in the act pick his puppy bum up and run outside with him (warning: not all dogs will stop when you pick them up). You'll have to watch your puppy at all times. Many people will leash the dog to them self even to keep an eye on the puppy until potty training is finished. Remove food and water at night, and when you are not home. (If you leave the water out, he's going to need to go!) Crate training can be quite helpful as dogs will try to avoid going where they sleep. The crate is also a good place to put your puppy when you can not be watching him. Remember if you go this rout never to use the crate as punishment. It's your dog's "den" and should be a safe, happy, and personal space.

Positive renforcement. Find a word like potty or out and use that word each time you ask if he wants to go out. Take some small treats. When you go out praise him for both peeing and pooping each and everytime. He will get the idea.

The easiest and quickest way to house train a puppy is to use a crate. It makes it much easier to avoid accidents in the house, and at 6 months old your pup should have reasonable bladder and bowel control. Don't be afraid to with hold his water at night. He will be just fine. If he's constantly taking water in at one end, it will constantly be coming out the other! That won't help him to learn to 'hold it' overnight. I'd really suggest you check out both these webpages http://www.the-puppy-dog-place.com/potty-train-a-puppy.html http://www.the-puppy-dog-place.com/crate-training-a-puppy.html they have tons of free tips, advice and information on house breaking. I think you'll find them helpful. Don't give up so easily on your puppy. Raising a pup takes time, effort and patience. It's like raising a child really. You have to show your puppy what you expect and wait for him to learn it. Just like a child doesn't learn how to behave overnight, your pup will take time. Best of luck
