why are the haddiths so differant from what muslims are taught?

i read the haddiths about ,saffiyya, one of mohammds wives i kept getting a differant replys from what i had read. muslims say that mohammad found her on the field of battle and put his cloke over her and she was divorced, and wanted to be a muslims. this came from a book writtened by martain lings in 1983,a english muslim. mohammad attacked her village killed her husband of 2 months, father, brothers and took her sisters as slaves. then he married her the same day. bukhari, volume 7, book 62, number 22. the prophet stayed for three days between khaibar and mendina, and there he consummated his marriage to saffiyya, the muslims wondered' is she [saffiyya] considered his wife or his slave girl. then they said'if he orders her to veil herself, she will be one of the mothers of the believers; but if he does not, she will be a slave girl. so when the prophet proceeded from there, he put a screening viel between her and the people. read the bukhari haddiths for the truth.
