how do i teach my great pyrenees to use treadmill? he does not seem to understand at all? my great pyrenees is gaining too much weight and the vet said that he is already very obese and because of it, his health can badly deteriorate. he pants a lot while climbing only little bit of stairs and he fails to run. if he runs, he stops in 2 to 3 secs only. i was trying to make him use the treadmill. i instructed him to stand on tread mill. He successfully stood on treadmill. Then when i hit the button for treadmill to move, he steps down. in fact as soon as the treadmill starts to move, he immediately steps down. he is not able to understand. how to make him understand that he needs to run on treadmill instead of stepping down? he is 2 year old and has very bloated belly and back.

Your dog is overweight and you're trying to teach him how to use a treadmill. Wow you are the best dog owner on the planet! Way to be sure he keeps active and healthy. That's sarcasm. Please find him a better home before you kill him!

there is no substitute for a good long walk, but if you use a tread mill, then you need to have your dog on a leash, the leash needs to be tied to the treadmill, so as the mill starts to move your dog can not get off, he will walk to keep up, keep it at a good pace, start slowly and increase the speed, do not get your dog running to start with but build the speed up, you also need to cut your dogs food down a little remember to do this slow and steady and not tire your dog out too much, go for a few pounds a week and do not expect your dog to run flat out as you could do more harm than good, ask your vet for a good exercises and feeding program and stick to it, best of luck honey.

Tie a leash to the side of the treadmill so he can't get off. Make sure you start out slow and don't overwork him. Give him a couple treats when he starts to walk. If you walked him daily he wouldn't have gotten obese in the first place. Why don't you just walk him 2-3 times a day instead of being lazy?
