For elementary school teachers...why would you teach a unit of study on Mexico?

Like, what is your rationale? What reasons are there to spend 2 weeks studying Mexico? serious reasons, please!

Thanks in advance!

There is much to be learned about any country. In two weeks, it is difficult to teach very much. Mexico has a long history and is part of the free trade agreement with Canada and the United States. Mexican workers are brought to Canada to help in the agricultural fields. There are many former Mexicans living in the U.S. Our lives are influenced by what happens in Mexico.

Well, you have to be a little more specific on exactly what they're learning. There are certain aspects of Mexico that are important to history.

In my state, the educational standards are clearly set out in the Curriculum Frameworks. Although the Frameworks have changed over the years, they have in the past dictated what subjects are taught at each level. A few years ago, for instance, our first graders studied Canada, Mexico, and Ghana.

In order to prepare children for upcoming tests and to expose them to information they need developmentally, the Frameworks give non-negotiable guidelines for curriculum content.

cultural diversity, it's the country next to US, there are a lot of people who move to the US from Mexico, people can learn about traditions and heritages other than their own, and it is important to introduce children at a young age of all different cultures, so they will grow up aware of how people are all different and come from different places
