Why is Judo taught is such a robotic manner? I like judo I think it is a great sport but I tell you it is frustrated how every throw has so many precise movements. Sometimes I think the Sensei's want a robot. I see some of the younger players who can throw a textbook Ippon Seionage, text book Ouchi Gari, textbook Koshi Guruma etc. etc. Yet some of these same kids lose every match in competition. I say less robotic routines and more feel and passion any opinions? I've had very good results in many tournaments and if you ask me to demonstrate throws I'm probably the one with the most variance from textbook I'm not saying Judo is robotic but the teachers teach like they are teaching robots.

You have to have something to work to to ie; textbook, if you had everyone with there own variation of a style you wouldn't have a style, But if you have the flare to be different with that style and you are getting results stick with it, for the vast majority it is better to stick with the textbook style

KeELP, you clearly have your Judo history mixed up. but as for the original question... you know, I find it kind of odd that you say that. Even more odd, though, is the fact that I can see where you're coming from. At my club, we focus a LOT on perfect 'textbook' techniques. Sometimes, it feels as if we zero in so much on the flawless execution of the technique at hand that we overlook the bigger picture. That is to say, we value the specifics of the technique more than its underlying concepts. Unfortunately, it is the underlying concepts that matter most, when utilizing the techniques in dynamic situations. The angles change when my opponent is no longer static... But, I feel like that 'robotic' quality is dependant on the sensei and the club. You mention that some young players from your club can execute excellent throws, but tend to lose in shiai? Well, I'm assuming that they lose to other judoka, so not every club has that problem right? Also, it's very likely that I see it this way because I'm in over my head. (And I'm speaking only for myself on this one.) I'm a craptacular whitebelt of a judoka and maybe it's because I suck that they hyperfocus on the little things; senior players at the club aren't rigid.
