are student teachers in nashville, tn paid while they student teach?

my wife is getting ready to student teach here in nashville, tn and we are both confused as to whether or not you get paid while you do it-if you don't i really think that's messed up
i realize that she needs to student teach to graduate and i don't think she should recieve teaching wages becuse she isn't yet a teacher, but like many students we are on our own, raising a child and trying to make ends meet. I'm sure student teaching is a full time jon so she won't really be able to work anywhere else becuase of it resulting in me having to work 2 jobs which I have no problem doing but what about the single parents out there who don't have someone in thier life to help them out. There should be some type of economic relief or something to support outside of having to take out loans, it doesn't seem to make much sense. I have to wonder how many people end up dropping out becuase of the economic stress of it.
