Each state has different requirements and you would have to contact the states your interested in. Generally means you need to take an exam to show your qualified but most importantly is the job offer. Mostly inner city school is where you'll get the job offers and paperwork for visa immigration. NY city and LA are on huge hiring recruitments. Good luck |

Please keep in mind that Cal's comment about working the US being miserable is only one opinion. I work at an elementary school in an urban (low income) area. I dreaded it because I thought the kids would be horrible. It's the exact opposite. These kids don't have a lot, so they appreciate their teachers caring about them. At least my second graders do |

The answer is yes and no. In some states you can substitute teach based on a 4 year degree, and in some states you can get an emergency teaching credential based on a 4 year degree if you are also enrolled and taking classes toward a teaching certification. However, if you want to teach for more than a year (this applies to most states) you will have to go through the state certification program for the state you will be teaching in. Our current nit-wit govt has also set up more restrictions by requiring ever more certification under its NCLB program. (No Child Left Behind sounds good, but the govt hasn't funded it; it's really just a bunch of baloney.) So, it's probable that which ever state you're in, you'll have to do about a year of university, despite your Australian qualifications, if you want to teach in a public--not a private-school. Private schools are more flexible about certification since they are not subsidized by the govt. Please be aware that teaching in the US is often a pretty miserable experience. You may want to think twice about it. |
