I want to teach myself bass guitar?

I don't want to buy/hire one, because I got told that I could teach myself using a 6 string guitar w/ 2 strings cut off but it'd take ages to get used to a proper bass if i teach myself ith a normal one then buy one.
I'm pretty sure that's true (it'd take ages to get used to it) but is it true that I could teach myself w/ that method?
coz it would take me ages to save for a bass and in the meantime that might work

i can actually get used to anything.
so i figure that i'd get used to the transition from guitar to bass.
if i don't, then I wouldn't mind teaching myself again after i've saved for one.
sometimes i really do bother.
