I agree with bearfox , i use join up that was introduced by monty roberts.. in using this you gain respect and trust from the horse by acting like horses do in herds and with each other.. i have a horse that no one would touch he was sooooo rude and pushy hed bite you just walking and he would try to buck me off when riding him and i started spending more time with him every time his stall gets cleaned doing join up and the change in him is amazing i never thought i could get him to be as respectful as he is now.... www.montyroberts.com/ this is monty roberts website there might not be the instruction on how to do it on that website but im sure you can find them somewhere on the internet....good luck and i hope this helps!

Is your horse "at home"? full contact with you? I personally (37 yrs old, working w/horses my in tire life, found in most cases young horses can and like to be treated like a house pet. Play on your level, treats as rewards, etc..look at the "Horse Whisperer" type training..it's really worth your time, if you want a life time partner in you horse! Don't be a "bully" toward your horse, take the time to understand...maybe he/she has had a bad experience....
I treat all the horses I have trained like abused possible bitting dogs...
handle with care and love

For a little extra control I would switch to a chain shank for your manner lessons. Start by teaching her "whoa", if she moves off without your signal (you starting to walk) bump her on the nose and make her back up.....bump to get her attention not yank. I like a horse who knows how to stand quietly, I achieve this by verbally reinforcing my whoa command and while still facing them walk to the end of the lead rope and walk a half circle around them as far as the rope allows, when they take a step you didin't ask for make them back up. When she gets what whoa means start walking (at your pace, not hers) and practice the whoa, start by stopping and then saying whoa, if she walks past you make her back up a few steps. This will keep her focused on your actions to avoid the extra work of backing up. If she tries to turn left into you use a riding crop in your left hand and poke her neck above the shoulder, use more of a push with the handle end, this is to make her uncomfortable when she doesn't respect your personal space...do not use anything sharp and in a pinch you can raise your leading arm and use your elbow. For teaching to turn right away from you, start with the cue of your leading hand guiding her head from under it, if she resists I like to raise my right hand (holding the excess lead) and raise it to their eye level, this usually encourages them to respond to your cue. These are ground training methods I've used on young and old, meant to get your horse focused on you, they will pay off only with patience, time and work on your part. You will be surprised once your gain your horses' respect on the ground how much more enjoyable your time with her will be. Good luck.
