Okay, This all varies on the state in which you plan to teach. For example in Illinois, you need a type 04 (I believe) certificate in order to teach high school. You also need a 4 year degree in which your courses are broken down to fulfilling a liberal arts education. (3-4 science classes, 2-3 English classes, 2 math classes, etc...) You will also need core education courses. Some of these will require for you to complete field hours(These requirements thus far, I am certain are required by all states and districts within the U.S.). Lastly you need a specialty subject- That will be the subject that you will teach. So, if it is history, you will need to take at least 10 history courses with the majority of them at the upper level (300). You will be certified by the state! But you will be employed by the district in which you teach. Hope this helps! oh, while you are teaching you are usually required to be completing professional development seminars and meetings- These are free, and are required to keep your license/certificate valid.
