| so if the bible doesn't teach that the earth is at the center of the universe...?
what interest did the catholic church have in trying to prevent galileo from teaching just that? if it didn't dispute what was already believed to be true from what was taught in the bible, why did the church have such a big concern about it being taught?
but the power of the catholic church came from the idea that they were more or less appointed by god. the bible was/is key in their power. popes are men, men can be flawed. but the bible is supposed to be the word of god. so if the bible is flawed, then you've got a bigger problem on your hands. honestly, how hard would it be for the catholic church to just overthrow a pope and call him a lunatic? i imagine it would be a lot easier than saying, oh, the bible is wrong. don't you think?
