Could someone teach me / explain, with a simple example, how to get a derivative...

...and how I can use it? I'm in pre-calc, I'm sure I'll learn this later, but my econ prof asked if I knew how to get a derivitive, and I didn't. It would be nice to know how to get it, and how I could use it.
