In teaching English words, I am making picture cards. Shoud a pic card be with the word or without the word? 2 kinders and 1 elementary just started to learn English. I am wondering which is best for them to learn the new vocabulary, to put the name on each picture or to make two kinds of cards for each item; only the word(the name) and only the picture. Please help me who cannot decide.

I would put the word and the picture on the card. That way the students can relate the picture to its word and vice versa. I think it would help the students with identification, comprehension, and memorization if both the word and picture were on the card.

What is their first language? I would make a picture card, a word card in English, and one in Spanish or what have you. Color code the cards so that they can be easily matched. For example: say you have the color green on one card, the word "green" on another and "Verde" on another. Cut the pictures and the words out and paste them onto red paper (contrast color to green). Do the other pictures and words with another background so that there will be a control of error.

Its child has a unique way of learning, you are doing the right job, by using picture child can easily learn to identify things, start with beginning letter of the picture and introduce the sound, make picture cards with english words and at the back the language they used to.Children this age can easily pick up new words and you will be amazed how fast they can adapt.Good Luck, I hope this will help you.
