| How do I get over two bad days in a row of substitute teaching? I've been at a school for about a month. It is the worst school in the county--they have a short list of subs, and it's because the kids have a real problem with discipline and their parents aren't doing their jobs. Thursday I had a class with 60 kids in it--I told them to sit down, be quiet, and work on something constructive. They wouldn't, no matter how many times I asked. They were so bad the asst. principal came in and lectured them. Friday there was a half-day. This one boy came in and claimed he needed to go to the counseling office b/c a family member died. I had written on the board I wasn't giving out passes. I told him I was sorry, but he couldn't go. He left anyway, and I called the office. They said he was there, but I wrote him up for walking out without a pass. Then I talked to another teacher about it, and she said I needed be stricter. All I hear from the kids is how mean I am to them. Was I wrong to do this to him? How do I get over these bad days? The reason I wasn't writing passes was b/c students take advantage of passes while a sub is here I'm interviewing for subbing in a much nicer school Monday. How do I explain that the kids are tough there? What are some better ways to deal with these difficult kids? I feel frustrated because the kids think I'm mean and miserable and way to strict, and the one teacher thinks I'm not strict enough. I feel I'm at the end of my rope.
