Initial teaching alphabet (ITA)?

Was anyone ever made to learn ITA ?
I feel it realy confused me during the early part of my life.
I first studied normal alphabet , then was made to learn ITA , then back to normal alphabet.

Was this an experement and did the parents have a choice what to learn?
