I went trough the same with my son. It just did not work for us. Sometimes I let him cry for a while, I mean just like 3-5 minutes, but I could not stand it. I just don't want to see my baby crying and going out of breath just because I want him to fall asleep right away! So I kept trying and trying for months. He started falling asleep by himself at 12 months.
I guess every baby is different, as is every mom. Just follow your instincts, and don't let your baby cry for hours, because someone said he will be spoiled.
Good luck!

It comforts me to know that you won't let your son cry. You do not need to do anything that you aren't prepared to do... if your baby needs you to fall asleep, they need you. You can try putting him down around the time he normally goes to bed, but if he cries pick him up and comfort him. My son will go to sleep on his own sometimes, but other times not. Just listen to his cues.
