Ways to get into secondary teaching?

My partner is currently in his last yer of a maths degree - he would like to teach maths as a secondary subject. what ways other than the PGCE are there to get into this? Maths is a shortage subject but there doesnt seem to be another way to get into teaching.

He could work unqualified for a supply agency for up to 3 years, and then take the GTP once he has decided if he likes it enough to jump that particularly tedious hoop.
