Why exactly is it illegal to teach evolution in some places?

I'm guessing it's because nobody knows exactly what it is? But can you tell me the real reason?

It's not illegal to teach it as a theory-- it's illegal to teach it as a truth, the same as it being illegal to teach religion in public schools, etc.

It's not illegal anywhere in the US that I know of. Why would it be?
