Have they quit teaching teens how to spell?

I have noticed on Yahoo! Answers and My Space - the spelling and grammar are awful! I'm no teacher - and I know that my spelling and grammar are not great - however what is the point of making yourself look ignorant by incorrectly typing things like dat and dem - it's one more letter!

Any comments?

I hate when people do that.
Especially when they "Tipe l!k3 d!$"
Even people who are thirty do it. It's annoying!

actually, i'm a teacher for the school district of philadelphia and they have eliminated spelling lessons from the curriculum. it's ridiculous, especially being in an area of the city where a lot of students do not speak English at home. how else are they supposed to learn how to spell correctly?

As a high school English teacher I can say that I spend more time teaching for standardized tests than I do with necessities such as vocabulary and spelling.

It stinks but it's a fact of life for most teachers.

Spelling should be taught in the primary grades with emphasis on dictionary use and its relation to correct grammar usage.
