ESOL: Anyone taught/studied low-literate adults learning English?

For my degree I am researching low/non literate immigrants who are learning English. There seems to be very little research done, and very little info on, this field. If anyone teaches ESOL to both educated and non-educated groups, maybe you can advise me whether you found you needed different teaching methods for each group.

Wow there are in fact many many researches done on low literacy of ESOL learners. My college are taking this up as a continuous project. Try googling the institute of LLU in London as they are the base of it all in the UK.
Also google IFL ESOL and Skills For Life ESOL.

I teach ESOL and follow the Cambridge exams. I tend to find drama and games work for the younger level and quizzes, hangman for the older ones. Make up games as well for Adults e.g. you pick up a card and told to order a meal, ask for the bill etc.
