How To teach A Horse A Horse Flying Changes?

I have a 4yo. Morgan, and we do hunter jumper shows.I was wondering how to teach him it?This summer me and my friend have a goal to teach our horses and this is mine.Flying Changes! So I am willing it to take a while but I just want him to get it down once in a while. He can feel if he is on the wrong lead but then he just brakes the canter. So any advice works!

He probably already knows flying lead changes and does them readily in the pasture. You have to think on those terms, first of all. So the question is, how do I communicate to him when I wish to do a flying lead change?

You are going to set him up for success.
You have to be in the correct lead in your circle.
Let's start with right lead.
Switching to left lead. Left front leg rising.
Straighten your horse with right rein, your right leg, and dropping left cheek all at once. You are helping him.

This pushes him up into the other lead. Keep the momentum up. That's why he is breaking. If he doesn't immediately pick up the rear, he soon will. They will correct themselves and gather it up soon.

Keep cantering and help him through it, even if it wasn't perfect.

Here's something neat you can try: Use a barrel like a barrel racer. Canter around 2. Somewhere in that run to barrel #2 the horse has to do a lead change to tackle the second barrel. He will figure it out and you will feel it. When he does it, figure out the spot and now you ask for it next time in advance. You help him. He gets it already and you follow through with your cues. Then this translates to a simple figure 8 without the barrel.

Watch a video of a race horse on a corner. Every corner he will shift leads with subtle shifts from the jockey. They just pick him up and set him over without the same leg cues you can use. Beautiful flying lead changes.
