Do Elementary Teachers get the opportunity to teach anymore?

I have always wanted to teach and absolutely love kids. Regardless of these answers I will still teach because it is my passion, but everyone in the field I talk to says they wasted their money on the degree because teaching isn't teaching anymore - it's discipline, tests, paperwork, etc. Opinions? From teachers preferrably
