Teaching Method?

Why do some teachers go around the class and ask a random student a question about the subject they are learning while others don't?
And do you think this is a good teaching method?

When I do that in my classes, it's usually to try to get a student back in focus when they're off-task. Does it work? Sometimes. Nothing is foolproof because every student is different and is driven by different motivations. Therefore it becomes necessary to try LOTS of different techniques while teaching.

My method is Kodaly music education.
My Q&A strategies are techniques, strategies, - not methods. Just FYI in my field, anyway.

I agree with the previous answerer that it is often more practical for building self esteem to ask questions of students who are familiar and/or enthusiastic about the topic. The student will have the benefit of being recognized as knowledgeable by their peers, and other students will be encouraged to volunteer thoughtful answers as well.
