Tutoring/Teaching Grade 9 and 10 math?

If I were to teach a math curriculum to a grade 9 student, which concepts would I need to emphasize (note that I would pefer a Canadian curriculum if possible).

The intent would be to prepare them for advanced math courses.

Any Education majors out there or Math teachers?

Thanks.
