How to teach density,mass and volume to a 14 year old.?

My son is failing science (as is most of his class) and so his teacher is giving an open book test in the hopes of bumping up some of her students marks. I know how to do these questions but I don't know how to make my son understand them. Also what are the type of things I could write in his book for him to use during the test? I am putting the formula, rememer to put quanity symbols...what else?!
