I think you should give them treats for behaving well but if they don't give them a detention. Have a blackboard that says DETENION and write down the names of the kids who are acting stupid. Don't be nice and take it off leave it. Soon they start behaving and u should ahve a movie day and PS don't make them work too hard!!!!!

Teaching is very stressful?

I work as a substitute teacher at the middle school level. WOW. These kids are out of control. I had three kids get DEFIANT with me in class. They got in my face. But I stood my ground and told them not to challenge me. I felt good after I kicked them out of class and told them not to come back. BUT, I realized that these bad kids cant help themselves. Its not really their fault. Maybes it bad parenting, they are lonely, mistreated at home, or abused and thats why they act so DEFIANT. Then later i felt bad for kicking them out of class. But, if your nice to them they walk all over you! So where do you draw the line? I cant get them to SHUT UP. They run their mouths in class constantly. Some of the kids in class feel sorry for me cause they tell other kids to shut up to help me out. Then sometimes im a mean drill seargent teacher and then im considered bi-polar by the kids but i get their attention quickly.. What works with students to get the best results in classroom management?

i would be nice to them!
kids will listen more if they like you!
it may seem like the meaner you are the more they listen!
but it's not true they are just not saying the mean things about you so loud so they don't get in trouble!
if your mean they will just say how cruel you are quietly to there friends or after class or in the halls!
let kids be kids and be nice!

i'm a student at the middle school level.

i will say i'm not the best student and not the best for teachers. I can sometimes get into trouble with teachers and the principal. but if you wanna be a likeable substitue you just gotta be nice and cool about things but when things get bad let them know that you can be tough.

I have teachers that i walk all over and i have teachers that i'm scared of and won't say a word in their class. I like a happy medium.

Follow the schools disclipline policy.
Is it not suppose to be followed when kids are bad?

There are lots of reasons kids are this way, but one reason is because schools do not disclipline them anymore.

And then they wonder why the kids are so bad

Try to be a cool teacher, I know I like it when my teachers act cool, it stops the troublemakers because they have no reason to get in a fight when they are happy. No-one would want to "piss of" a good teacher so try that. You might like it

Hm.. let's see. I see that most of the laid back, fun story telling subs are the ones that get along with the kids the best. Try to talk about the game last night or other ways to connect with them.
