I don't think you are going to learn German very well this way. Emails won't teach how you to SPEAK. Learning to speak a foreign language requires you speaking to fluent speakers of the language so that they can correct your pronunciation, inflections, and grammar.

If you insist on learning online, try downloading Skype, which is similar to AIM, but allows you to make voice calls. So you could practice speaking with a German Skype buddy. Also, those translation websites are not a good idea. I take French at school and whenever we have a paper to do, my professor can always tell when I've used one of those sites to do my work...b/c they don't have the context in which you're using the word and quite often translate incorrectly. The best thing is probably to take it at school and also practice speaking as much as possible. Once you have a little under your belt, studying abroad in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland would be a good idea.
