college level teaching in english: should I major in English or major in Writing?

I would like to become a college English professor- can I major in writing, or would I have to major in English or English Lit. I've been doing some reasearch and finding out that there are more job prospects for persons with an english degree, rather than a writing degree. Is this true? I was thinking of majoring in writing (creative writing) because I loveeee to get lost in my imagination and the thought of bringing my readers there with me- thrills me! I want to teach because I have found how stimulating it is to spread knowledge from one person to another (when it finally clicks and you can see it in their eyes that they understand, or you can get someone to think differently then the norm- i love it.) I was thinking of becoming a college english professor because I would be able to do both: stimulate young minds in an educational environment and freelance to get my creative juices going. So you see my problem: Which major would be BEST to declare, English or Writing?
