Can people teach at the same school where they got their doctorate?

Can people teach at the same school where they got their doctorate?

For example, if someone got their doctorate at NYU, could they become a professor at NYU or would they have to be a professor elsewhere?
The reason I am asking this is because my friend told me that people do not become professors at the school where they got their doctorate from.
So I'm just curious.
