Is art slowing the advancement of technology? (Look big words!)?

I've been going through what I am sure is just another stupid-ass teenage phase, but since none of my pot-smoking, drinking, hair-straightening, conforming, socially-influenced, hair-swooshing, self-pitying, critisizing peers seem to be able to answer this question (mostly because they are too busy trying to get attention by painting a sadder picture,writing a sadder song about how bad they have it or how in love they are, or finding a way to go out with their equally stupid friends), I need to know that if we are all wallowing in different categories of life, at different times, and all art really is, is expression, then is expression a waste of time (for adults)?

I am asking this because I want to be a composer or some sort of artist like that eventually, and I want to know if I am making a worthy decision. I'm hoping someone who has actually hit marurity can help me answer this.
