Charlton Heston - Just Act Chuck????

Anytime Heston opened his mouth, he put his foot in it. He undoubtedly was a Freemason and like John Wayne probably a rightwing redneck nutcase.

Still he was one of the best actors ever. He, along with James Mason, were my mother`s favourite actors. And whilst James Mason is among my top five (including Eduardo Noriega and Colin Firth) Heston is only a favourite.

Amazing to think that DeMille`s `The Greatest Show on Earth` was his first major Hollywood film. He was so assured....so accomplished.

I met him once, just briefly....he was about 6`6''. Impressive!

So what`s your favourite Chuck-flick? `Touch of Evil` with Janet Leigh or those he did with Ava Gardner (superb).

And what was so great about Heston? That tremulous quality of self-denial appearing ever so often and softening something of that great hulk of a man. Some call it religious deference. Sexual deference. Whatever.

With Heston it worked.
