Making my video card act older?

I have a laptop that I bought last summer. I would like to play a game that is from the Windows 98 era, but just scraped ahead of DOS. It crashes.

The internet has these two solutions:
Use DOSBox...except this isn't a DOS game.
Use Compatibility Mode, which is good, except for the fact that it's my video card that's causing the crash, so Compatibility Mode isn't going to help me.

Am I SOL? Is there some way to Emulate an older video card or something? Maybe Emulate DX5 or something like that?

if you got vista run it in classic mode

try having OpenGL render it....
