Was Grease 1978 Movie An Original Story or Based Off Of A Theater Production?

I saw this movie a million times but I wanted to know one thing...

Is this movie Grease a movie-musical production copied from a stage theater production; like the Hairspray movie and Mama Mia! movie?

Or is Grease an original story made into a musical that was never a theater production before?
