| ACT score help!? Alright, so I'm going into 11th grade next year, and I took the ACT test administered on June 14th for my first time. I got my scores: 32 composite; 31 English, 33 Math, 30 Reading, 32 Science. I'm satisfied with these scores, but I only got an 8 on the writing portion, lowering my combined eng/writ score to 29. I had the flu and started to get a bit lightheaded after the break (during reading, science and writing portions). I wasn't as focused as I could have been and blindly guessed on the last 6 reading and last 4 science from lack of time (turned out well in the end, though!). I am not happy with my writing score at all. These were the comments left:
Your essay acknowledged counterarguments on the issue but did not discuss them. Your essay adequately supported general statements with specific reasons, examples, and details. Your essay maintained focus on the specific issue in the prompt. I didn't discuss the counteragument b/c it was my first time writing an essay in 30 mins, and
I was afraid I wouldn't finish in time. Somehow, though, I finished in about 25 mins, so I regretted not discussing the counterargument more thoroughly in the back of my head. I always got 5s (nothing more or less) in my Sophomore Honors English Class on the practice ACT essays teachers would grade. How can I improve my writing score? What format should I follow when writing the body paragraphs? I always do it this way: topic sentence, support statement 1, an elaboration or 2, support statement 2 w/transition, an elaboration or 2, and then my closing sentence. ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, the college I want to go to is Northwestern University, where I would like to be accepted into their medical program (ranked 14th nationally and 21st for med school). I do have extracurriculars, a 4.5 gpa (hopefully a 5.0 Junior Year and a 4.67 Senior Year), high ranking (gunning for top 10 at my new high school w/ a class of like 950 or so), and several honors (Who's Who All American Scholar-1% of high schoolers have it). Hopefully the writing portion isn't important! |
