should i not allow students to write/draw about god in class?

i teach kindergarten and first grade in FL. one of my students drew a cross, and began to write about god in one of our writing centers. i explained to him that we cannot write/draw about that subject at school, but that it could be done at church or at home.

i felt bad, but i didnt want to be the subject of questioning from potential parents of other faiths.

another teacher found out that i wouldn't let the student draw or write about god in school...and she was confused about why i wouldnt let it go on.

don't we have a separation of church and state?

in the past i have been "yelled at" by parents because at halloween i read a book about a little girl witch that goes to the library and discovers all of the things available there to make reading fun. i try to be very careful about sensitive subjects in my class bc you never know who is going to get upset about what.

just curious about other people's opinions.
