What do you rinse your brushes out with when you use oil paints?

I'm looking to do an oil painting, and the last time I did one was in highschool. And I can't remember what my art teacher gave me to rinse my brush out in between colors :S I know it wouldn't be water...would it have been paint thinner?

I'm using my boyfriends oil painting kit, and it also has this "Stand Oil" made from Linseed oil, it has a yellow tint, but when I put it on a piece of paper to test, it goes on clearish. What is it used for? Thinning the colors?

Mineral spirits or turpentine will clear the paint from your brushes, but you must wash them with soap (I use Dove dish soap) and water to clean them; condition with your favorite hair conditioner and shape them before you store them.
Stand oil is a thickened linseed oil for improving the viscosity of your paint.
