Can you be a photography major at the School of Visual Arts if you did

not take art classes in high school? I am in 10th grade and have only taken art fundamentals last year, next year I plan on taking photography. I do not take classes like painting because I am not a good drawer but I am a good photographer. I plan on becoming a photojournalist. So If i take photography and journalism in high school will they accept me? **sorry if I don't make sense, i have been trying to explain this to many people who dont understand.**

Most Visual Arts schools require that you turn in a portfolio in order to be accepted to their programs. As long as you have work to show them and they are impressed by it, you should be okay. However, almost all visual art programs require that you take basic drawing courses, even if you are enrolled in photography. I would contact the particular school you are interested in and talk to an admissions counselor for information on what you need.

Every art school has different requirements for admissions. Apparently, SVA wants applicants to the photography department to submit a portfolio of only photographs.

So, in terms of what you'll need to do for the next two years, the photography class is the obvious choice. BUT...you should probably try to take a drawing or painting class too. You may want to apply to other schools besides SVA, and those may require all of their students to take drawing classes, at least at the freshman level.
