How is my painting and drawing??Please please please look!?

My friends and parents tell me I'm very talented in painting and drawing. But im not sure if their just saying that because they are who they are. I know I'm better than the average 9th grader (im 14 btw) but how good am i? Do I have potential? Should I take classes or try to learn techniques, or is my talent not good enough to persue it?? This is a painting i did. I was inspired to do it from the cover a book called "new moon"
this is the painting:

This is a sketch i did. I was wondering if i look at ppl faces (like pics from magazines) to draw, does it mean im "cheating" Do real 'artists' not look at faces when they draw them?? (i looked at and Arden B commercial for the face, and the body was my own. Are my proportions okay?its a mermaid...
