Perhaps... if you're good at humans, then definitely do something with them. People love that. Maybe something that shows a lot of emotion. If you're not good at humans, then try a very relaxing scenery thing. Alternately, you can draw a very violent scene, like a raging storm, or something or that nature. Anyways. Good luck! |

It really kinda depends on the judges; some judges love technical stuff, others are all about the abstract. You just have to take a shot at it sometimes. If you know it's a contest where they are looking for awesome technical or traditional stuff, do fabric and human figures maybe. (something with a lot of texture) Or, an old persons hands, lots of wrinkles. If it's nicely done, it will be appreciated. If you think they would be looking for more of a meaningful side to the art, such as something about the artist(you) or a political statement, do something that really means a lot to you, but portray it in an interesting and unique way.

Well, it depends on the topic of the contest - or is there one? And it also depends on your personal style. Think of your muses. Who/what are they? Listen to your muses and put your spin on what they tell you. For me, my two best friends are the most inspiring things, as well as flowers and industrial parks - so I spend time at industrial parks, which lifts my spirits, and I get home and spin my style on my friends' portraits. Go somewhere that will put ideas into your head and make you happy (unless you draw your best when angsty, in which case.. angst away!) I must say, though, that if your drawing contains a person, make sure the pose is interesting. None of that "just standing there" stuff, judges don't like that much, even if it is masterfully drawn. Pick a "tone" for the picture - an emotion you want to convey. Say, if you were drawing a contemplative picture, your subject would be staring off into the distance, brows furrowed, maybe leaning his head on his hands or slumped over a table. Conversely, if you want it to be happy, don't just draw someone smiling! Take a picture of your friends laughing and joking around, then draw it and put your own personal style into it. You could also try something vintage/collagey, as a lot of people are trying to explore that nowadays. It involves a lot of text, yellowed backgrounds, old photographs, and pen drawings. Silhouettes, still lifes, portraits overlayed onto text and such. |
