I am renting an apartment that has lead paint?

It did not really concern me at first since as a child I grew up in a house that had lead based paint. I then read the phamplet they gave me and it worries me. I have 3 neices and a nephew I want them to visit me at my new apartment. I know that it probably would not effect me much since I am an adult. I am a worrier and i know if one of the kids get sick at my house I would probably rush them to the hospital thinking they have lead poisoning. How dangerous is it really? How likely is it to still be there from 1973? (the lead paint.) I look on the internet but it does not clear it up for me. Would they really be able to lease an apartment that is a health hazard? I put down a deposit and want to move there because this was the nicest apartment that I could afford in my area. What should I ask the apartment leasers to find out more information.
my nephew is 3. My neices are 1, 5 and 8. I really just need to look out for the younger ones mainly then. They would not stay the night with me since they are too young. The 5 and 8 year old might but I am pretty sure they would not eat paint chips.
