Does Islam forbid its followers to draw images of animals and human beings?

I am soon to be teaching a class where one of the interactive exercises I use in the UK involves working in pairs to reproduce a drawing featuring a human and an animal. Would this exercise be likely to cause offence to Muslims? My students are media business professionals from various Middle Eastern countries.
