,<drawing> volume vs. value?

When an assignment says:
"Arrange three or more cups under strong light and define the voulume of the cups. Clearly deine the direaction of the light source through light shades and highlights on the cups and dark shades on the cups and cast shadows on the ground plane"
Could I assume that volume and value are the same thing; just different names? What exactly does it mean to show volume in a drawing? Is it all about shading...?
