What is the best way to paint the exterior of a home?

I'm thinking of painting my grandmother's home in July in Tennessee (with some minor assistance from family) and I was wondering what is the best way to paint the exterior of a home? Are there special things I would need to know? Thanks for the help in advance.
I just wanted to add my grandmother has a one story house and my aunt painted her house back in 1999 and used a ladder to get to the higher parts. Is there primer that needs to go on the exterior or a waterproof paint? Maybe I will just pay someone to do it...lol, but I prefer to do it myself. I think it's more special. Now that I'm thinking about it, how much would it cost for a professional company to go out and paint it? Thanks.
